Sacramento, CA – Today, the California Democratic Party voted today to oppose Proposition 27 – the Corporate Online Gambling Prop – on the November ballot.
“By opposing Prop 27, California Democrats rejected out-of-state corporations and reaffirmed their commitment to California’s Indian tribes,” said Reid Milanovich, Tribal Chairman, Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. “Prop 27 is not a solution to anything. It would expose children to a massive expansion of gambling and turn every cell phone, gaming console, tablet and laptop into a gambling device. Prop 27 is a direct attack on tribal gaming and Indian self-reliance.”
The vote came after the Resolutions Committee unanimously voted to recommend an oppose position on Prop 27 the day before. The party went neutral on Prop 26.
Across the state, California Democratic State Central Committees and clubs, including the California Young Democrats, have overwhelmingly voted to support Prop 26 and oppose Prop 27:

- Butte County Democratic Central Committee
- El Dorado County Democratic Central Committee

Background:
Prop 26, the in-person, Tribal Sports Wagering Act, would authorize in-person sports wagering at highly regulated tribal casinos and licensed horse racetracks. Prop 26 is the most responsible approach to authorizing sports betting in California: all bets must be placed in-person with safeguards in place to prevent underage and illegal gambling. It will help create jobs and economic opportunities that support Indian self-reliance, while benefiting all Californians, generating tens of millions of dollars annually in new revenues for public schools, wildfire prevention and other state priorities.
In contrast, Prop 27, the Corporate Online Gambling Prop, would authorize a massive expansion of online and mobile gambling across the state – turning every cell phone, laptop, and tablet into a gambling device. Under Prop 27, anyone in California could gamble anytime – leading to a massive increase in problem and underage gambling.
