Sacramento, CA– The NO on Prop 27 campaign announced that its broad, bipartisan coalition opposed to Prop 27 has grown to nearly 300 members. This coalition of California Indian tribes, civil rights organizations, educators, faith, business, labor, public safety leaders, elected officials, mental health experts and advocates for the homeless vowed to defeat Prop 27 this November.
Prop 27 would authorize a massive expansion of online and mobile gambling across California – turning every cell phone, laptop and tablet into a gambling device.
“We are proud to be joined by hundreds of organizations and community leaders from across the state in strong opposition to Prop 27,” said Kenneth Kahn, Tribal Chairman of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. “Our broad coalition is growing every day, and we are committed to defeating Prop 27. Make no mistake, Prop 27 is bad for tribes and bad for all Californians. Voters will not be fooled by Prop 27’s false promises and deceptive advertising.”
“Prop 27 is a fundamentally flawed measure that will make the homeless crisis worse in California,” said Kendra Lewis, Executive Director of the Sacramento Housing Alliance. “The fact that Prop 27’s backers are using this very real humanitarian crisis to sell their deceptive online gambling measure is shameful.”
“A massive expansion of online and mobile gambling is the last thing California needs,” said Greg Totten, Chief Executive Officer of the California District Attorneys Association. “Prop 27 would multiply the risks of addiction and problem gambling among California’s most vulnerable communities, including youth, seniors, veterans and the unhoused – hurting those who can least afford it.”
Background:
Prop 27, sponsored and entirely funded by out-of-state online gambling corporations like DraftKings, FanDuel and Bet MGM, would legalize the largest expansion of online and mobile sports gambling in the history of the country – turning virtually every cell phone, laptop and tablet into a gambling device. Prop 27 would multiply the risks of addiction and problem gambling among California’s most vulnerable, jeopardize Indian self-reliance and drain billions of dollars from our state. Under Prop 27, 90% of profits go to the out-of-state corporations, leaving only pennies for homelessness programs and even less for California’s tribes.
